    Fabric Requirements

  • A minimum of 3 yards of fabric is required for trousers - for an average sized person. If you're taller than 6' - you'll need 3 1/2 yards of fabric. Oxford trousers and zoot trousers require the same amount of fabric.
  • A minimum of 3 yards of fabric is required for the coat - for an average sized person. If you're taller than 6' - you'll need 3 1/2 yards of fabric. Oxford coats and zoot coats require the same amount of fabric.
  • PLEASE DON'T LET FABRIC MERCHANTS SELL YOU LESS THAN MY REQUIREMENTS! Many merchants think that they are doing you a favor by advising you that you only need 1 1/2 yards of fabric for a pair of trousers, but they don't understand the style of trousers that you are ordering.

    Lining

  • The coats need to be lined. During the 1940s, the lining was as important as the fabric that the coat was made from. The gentlemen who were wearing the zoot suits would position themselves so that they were standing with their hands at their hips and holding their jackets open so the lining would show. The lining was chosen very carefully. It contrasted with the color of the coat and was very bright and "showy". Coats require approximately 4 yards of lining.
  • If you choose a light weight suiting, the trousers may need lining. That can be determined once you've selected the fabric.
